Why Spring is a Season of Renewal & Self-Care

Sep 17, 2023

I absolutely love spring—the blooming flowers, warm breezes, the promise of lazy warm days ahead and new beginnings. There’s something magical about this time of year that fills my heart with joy. It’s not just the vibrant colours of nature or the warmth the sun on my skin; it’s the sense of renewal that spring brings. Just as the world awakens from its winter slumber, so too can we embrace a fresh start in our lives. As a mother, a nutritionist, and a firm believer in the power of self-care, I cherish the arrival of spring for the opportunities it offers to prioritise our well-being.

One of the simplest yet most profound acts of self-care is allocating some time alone for yourself each week. Ideally, aim for at least an hour. This isn’t just about solitude; it’s about being present with yourself—mind, body, and spirit. In a world filled with constant noise and distractions, this “me time” becomes a sanctuary for recharging your mental health.

As a mother of two young children, I understand the challenges of sleep deprivation all too well. While a solid eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is the dream, it isn’t always a reality for parents. That’s why it’s crucial to make up for that sleep deficit whenever possible. Grab a nap when the baby sleeps, rest your eyes while your toddler enjoys their favorite show, or try to squeeze in extra sleep during the day if another adult is around. Even going to bed a little earlier at night can make a significant difference. It may not be perfect, but it’s a lifeline during these demanding times.

Carving out just three to five minutes a day for mindfulness can have a profound impact on your well-being. Simple breath techniques, such as alternate nostril breathing (a yogic practice), can help you find calmness in moments of anxiety or agitation. It’s about creating pockets of peace in your day, allowing yourself to reset and refocus.

Think of your body as an engine. If you put cheap fuel in it, it won’t perform at its best. But when you provide it with premium fuel, it runs like a dream. A healthy diet is essential for supporting your body and providing it with the nutrients it needs to function optimally. It’s easy to reach for quick energy fixes like coffee, chocolate, or sugar to get through the day. Still, these options lack essential nutrients and can leave you feeling depleted in the long run.

Lastly, always remember that you’re not alone. If things don’t feel right, whether emotionally or physically, there are caring professionals ready to help you get back on track to feeling well. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Taking care of yourself isn’t about putting yourself first; it’s about recognising that you matter too. Your health and well-being are essential, and by nurturing yourself, you become better equipped to care for those you love.
