Why peri/menopause is the beginning of your power

Peri/menopause is Not the End – It’s the Beginning of Your Power

For too long, peri/menopause have been framed as something to endure – a slow decline, a loss of energy, a closing chapter. Your fertile years are behind you, your purpose is done, you are now a crone.

But what if that story was never ours to carry? What if, instead of seeing menopause as an ending, we reclaimed it as a transition into a new kind of vitality, wisdom, and strength?

Now, as I myself move through my 40s, I feel this shift within me. Yes, my baby-making years are behind me. I’m no longer in my spring of youth or the summer of life creation, and does that bring sadness? In some ways, yes. But I also know that the best years are still ahead of me. With that shift comes my autumn – perimenopause and beyond.

Perimenopause is not the winter of your life. It’s your autumn – a season of deep nourishment, clarity, and renewal.

The Myth of Decline: What’s Really Happening in Menopause

There’s a common belief that menopause means your metabolism slows, your energy fades, and your body starts working against you – that you’ll inevitably “shrivel up” and lose the vibrancy you once had.

And while change is inevitable, decline is not. Yes, your hormones shift. Yes, your body is recalibrating. But when supported well, this phase can be one of balance, vitality, and ease – not exhaustion.

In many cultures, menopause is honoured as a time of awakening and power – a transition from the outward energy of your reproductive years into a more intuitive, grounded, and self-assured way of living. So why does menopause feel like a struggle for so many women today?

Why Menopause Feels Like an Uphill Battle (And How to Shift It)

If menopause feels overwhelming, it’s not because your body is failing you – it’s because modern life isn’t designed to support this transition. For many women, their 40s and 50s are their busiest years. Juggling careers, raising families, caring for aging parents, and keeping up with an endless to-do list leaves little room for the deep nourishment and restorative care that our bodies desperately need during this time.

Your body is incredibly capable of balance and vitality, but it needs the right support.

The Three Biggest Roadblocks to Menopausal Vitality

1. Blood Sugar & Insulin Resistance

One of the biggest (and often most overlooked) changes in menopause is how your body processes carbohydrates. Even if your eating habits haven’t changed, fluctuating estrogen and progesterone can make you more insulin resistant.

This means:

  • Increased belly fat, stubborn weight gain, and energy crashes
  • More intense cravings for sugar and carbs
  • Feeling constantly fatigued even after a full night’s sleep

2. Chronic Stress & Adrenal Fatigue

By the time you reach menopause, your adrenal glands take over part of your hormone production. But if they’ve been running on empty for years, this transition can feel like burnout instead of balance.

Many women enter perimenopause already depleted, especially after years of postpartum recovery, broken sleep, and the ongoing stress of modern life. The result?

  • Brain fog, anxiety, and poor sleep
  • Feeling constantly wired but tired
  • A deep sense of exhaustion that coffee won’t fix

3. Inflammation & Mitochondrial Health

Chronic low-grade inflammation – driven by stress, diet, and lifestyle – affects everything from metabolism to mood. It can cause:

  • Stiff joints, sluggish digestion, and increased aches and pains
  • A feeling of heaviness and bloating
  • Difficulty in losing weight despite eating well

When we support our body with nourishing foods and lifestyle shifts, we regain energy and vitality instead of feeling like we’re dragging through the day.

Embracing Your Autumn Season: How to Support Your Body Naturally

Instead of fighting against your body, what if you partnered with it?

Nourish instead of restrict – Your metabolism is shifting, but it’s not shutting down. Balancing blood sugar, prioritizing protein, and incorporating nutrient-dense whole foods makes all the difference.

Support your stress response – Your nervous system is the foundation of hormonal balance. Nutrient’s such as magnesium & vitamin C, breathwork, and simple daily rituals can help restore calm and control.

Move in ways that energise you – Strength training, gentle cardio, and mobility work support bone health, muscle tone, and longevity.
